Bret Harte high school senior Erika, Calaveras County senior portraits

I love photographing modern weddings, but I also love capturing high school seniors fashionably.  I can express my ideas and vision not limited to a location, time, nor outfits. I have more say in the vision than a wedding.  Also, I am only giving direction and focused on one person in front of the camera.  Lastly, so many teens live in an insecure world of comparison and by default just want to look good and fit in.  We all do, but the pressure on teenagers is amplified.  When teens are looking to get high school senior photos, they are wanting something extraordinary and epic.  So, when families contact me for senior photos, they are not going to get a cookie-cutter, walk-in, walk-out senior photos. I don’t work like that.  If you’re coming to me, it means you want something more than just quick photos.

I have been photographing seniors recently, and wanted to share a few images from Bret Harte high school senior, Erika.  It seems I photograph many seniors from Amador County, primarily Argonaut high school and Amador high school.  I have photographed seniors from Calaveras High and Bret Harte as you can see here on the American High School photoshoot.  I’m starting to shoot more Calaveras County seniors now, and I’m excited to expand.

Lake Tahoe Wedding Photographer, Creative Bridal Session

Here are some snowy mages we photographed with Brooke last month for her bridal session (also known as “Trash the Dress” or “Creative Bridal Portraits”).  The idea is that a bride will probably never wear her dress again, put in storage believing maybe someday it will be used for something good, but really not. So, I photograph the bride in her dress after the wedding in a creative way, and sometimes it gets wet or dirty. John Michael Cooper, a friend of mine, started the whole trend with the “Joan of Arc” bride on fire portrait years ago. Google it and you will see, or just click here. While shocking at first, many brides today enjoy being photographed today in their dresses creatively, whether it’s on the beach, in a swimming pools, in the dirt, in grass, in the mountains, or wherever you desire.  Most the time, the cleaners take care of it.

In this session, Brooke braved the cold and windy weather early in the morning at around 20+ degrees outside in the snow, in the rocks, in the dirt, and even in the trees.  Most of the session took place in between Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood Resort.  We used the wind and backdrop for part of the look, which was our vision.  The richer blue skies are the result of being in higher altitude, as we were around 6000-8000 ft. elevation, with no headaches.  We left the SUV running with the heater full blast, so everyone could defrost their bodies, and my camera gear could stay operable, shooting typically around 20 minutes each time before returning to our vehicle.  Kudos to Brooke for being a warrior bride.  She did a wonderful job!!

Preston Castle Fashion Photo shoot, Ione California

Theme: Sacramento Fashion Photography
Venue: Preston Castle, Ione, California
Model: Serena Starks
Photographer: Charleton Churchill

I was at Preston Castle this following weekend with many other photographers in a four hour window to photograph whatever we wanted. When I arrived, I was going to shoot artistic self-portraits, say hi to some photographer friends, and search the castle for ghosts (kidding on the ghosts part, I don’t mess around with that stuff). However, I was introduced to Serena, a local model, who graciously allowed me to photograph her for a portion of the time. Thanks to the Preston Castle team and leaders who worked hard and opened the doors to us. Here are a few of the photographs from the day.

- THE WORKSHOP – YOU’RE AN ARTIST, NOT JUST A PHOTOGRAPHER

In an “american idol” world where many call themselves a photographer, one important element seems to be missing in much of it:  The Art.  Without question, the digital age of photography has produced lazy and watered-down work, which has diluted the market.   As more and more people purchase cameras, along with a website and some pictures of their kids and pets (and stats show there are no signs of stopping) the rise in qualitative art and explosive imagery by emerging artists will only cut through.  These artists will separate themselves from the rest. If you want to be an artist and stand out, it’s going to take much more than pointing and shooting.

In this workshop, I want to equip you with the tools I have learned to achieve the “wow factor” in my images.  I want to inspire and teach you personally, as a coach and cheerleader (but not the girly kind), a reason why our group is limited to 15-20 students.  We’ll go over lighting (natural light and I’ll bring my lighting gear, battery packs), vision, inspiration, posing/directing, and how I do it.  We will also have a live demonstration, and allow you to photograph a few talented models in fashion attire out in a few planned locations (THE DRY OPEN DESERT & the City).  If you’re serious about getting the wow factor in your images, this workshop is for you!  Plus, we are honored to have with us two very talented models whom we will be working with on our day!  Check them out below!  (Warning: I will not be discussing how your camera works.  Please get to know your camera before you come.  That is another workshop).  I look forward to seeing you there!
