I drove to Calistoga to photograph one of my gracious engaged couples with probably one of the most beautiful properties I’ve seen in the Napa Valley. Jennifer and Jason are a New York couple who flew out to the Castello di Amorosa for some engagement photos. They called me early on to capture their pre-wedding photos, creatively. I did my research before arriving, but when I showed up, the Castle was more complex than I imagined, with more tunnels, chambers, hallways, courtyards, lakes, and rivers throughout the property. In fact, nearly all the images you see below were envisioned while walking through the tour; we had to think fast and we were on a time schedule with a very kind tour guide. I had my trusty Profoto B1 light with me the whole time and I’m so glad I did because much of the medieval castle areas were dark. While I had not even met Jason and Jennifer before arriving, and they had some ideas of what they wanted, they were the sweetest couple and just told me to do my thing with the camera. I love my job and working with couples who want me to create magic for them. Here are some of the images below of what was created together. Congratulations to Jason and Jennifer who are planning their wedding next year in New York.

Lake Tahoe weddings are at the top of my list of favorite destinations. So, as you know, I was glad to be invited to photograph Danny and Katie’s wedding in south shore at the Tahoe Beach Retreat and lodge. I drove up the day before to photograph another couple’s engagement session, but I was a little hesitant to go. We had the raging California Butte fire to deal with before I left my wife and three girls. I had packed and prepared all my important items from our home before I left, put up the Yakima, and brought all my important gear, just in case we were asked to evacuate. So with that, I felt much better about going.
After the engagement session on Friday, I spent the night and prepared for Danny and Katie’s exciting Saturday wedding. Even though Lake Tahoe was much lower because of the drought (and smoke from the Fire later in the day), we made sure to take advantage and plan our creative portraits with Danny, Katie, and the wedding party where the water should have been below the dock.
Danny and Katie opted to see each other during the ceremony on the beach. Danny was emotional and you could tell he loved her. Early in the day, back in his room, he read a letter from his wife-to-be, which he could barely read without stopping and fighting back tears. Later during the ceremony, he fought back emotions and embraced Katie’s father for a long hug as he received her hand. After they said “I do” and kissed, the party started.
Congratulations to Danny and Katie on their marriage and new life together. Here are some of the photos from their wedding day.
